Let’s side-step the bullshit and cut straight to the chase: I love me some Mastodon. I can’t stand heavy metal bands with screaming vocalists, but Mastodon, for me at least, bridges the gap between the TOOL’s and the MESHUGGA’s of the world…and they do it really, really well.
When I heard that Mastodon’s new album, Crack the Skye, was being produced by (the one and only) Brendan O’Brien (who made a name for himself with Pearl Jam’s 1993 release, Vs.), I was stoked…and at the same time, a little nervous.
O’Brien does manage to get great performances out of the talent, but I’ve never been blown away by his final mixes.
Since it’s release on Jan 27, I have played the new single, Divinations, about 30 times. It fucking rocks.
It begins with what sounds like a banjo, and quickly evolves into a churning mass of raw emotion. Something about the track makes you want to sing along even though making out actual words is damn near impossible.
“No escaaaaape….Viking spirits…”
Who knows what he’s saying? Who cares? It’s badass…
Some of the guitar seems a bit buried in the mix, but my copy isn’t lossless, so I won’t make a big deal about it yet.
I’m going to save the real “review” for the album, but let it be known…after hearing the single, it’s safe to say that this album is going to be huge.
You might be able to download the song here. I didn’t post it, so, be careful.
